Abstract

1,274,355. Fuel filter. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 19 April, 1971 [28 Jan., 1970], No. 4070/ 70. Heading B1D. A filter element for liquid fuel is made from a strip of filter paper (Fig. 1) to which lines 2, 3 of adhesive are applied on opposite faces adjacent the two respective edges the strip being then pleated to form pleats whose respective sides are sealed together at one end (the front in Fig. 1) but sealed to the adjacent sides of the two neighbouring pleats at the other end (rear in Fig. 1), and the element is then formed into an annulus, with the sealing lines 2, 3 at opposite ends. The annulus is enclosed between inner and outer tubes with respective integral end caps and sealed thereto at its inner and outer peripheries at opposite respective ends. Fig. 5 (not shown) represents this construction with the annulus engaging the inner and outer tubes and the resulting unit clamped between a top head and a bottom sump which collects water droplets, flow being upwards or downwards through the annular element. Fig. 6 shows a more elaborate construction, wherein an additional inner tube 51 is provided, the space between the inner tubes 51 and 10 communicating with inlet or outlet holes 31 in end cap 11 via channels formed by depressions 52, 53, thereby enabling air to be vented from said space. Pleats may be spaced by dimples (not shown) and the paper is impregnated with resin or resin is incorporated in the paper during its manufacture.
