Abstract

In a wrapping machine of the type wherein rectangular articles 11 are successively fed from a magazine 12 by a continuously-moving chain conveyer 13, 14 into engagement with respective wrappers 17, which are cut from a transverselymoving foil web 21 fed by constant-speed rollers 22 through a cutter mechanism 18, 19, the conveyer is driven at a varying speed by a pair of elliptical gears 33, 34 and each wrapper is severed from the web at the commencement of a period of acceleration of the conveyer to provide an adequate gap between the adjacent severed edges of the wrapper and web. The article is wrapped in a block-ended manner by passage through a folder 23, 24 which folds the open-sides of the wrapper. On transfer of the partially-wrapped package into a magazine 28 by opposed transfer members 29 and a reciprocating pusher 32, the transfer members together with a folding tab 31 and the wall of the magazine fold the open end of the wrapper. Heaters 27 and 30 heat-seal the formed side and end closures. The cutter mechanism 18, 19 comprises an elliptical gear-driven rotary blade and a fixed ledger blade.
