Abstract
1,274,108. Lasers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 22 Aug., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 42015/69. Heading. H1C. In a Nd<SP>+3</SP>: YAG laser a filter is positioned between the active medium and the source of pumping energy to extract ultra-violet light from the pumping energy. The laser rod and pumping lamp are situated in respective halves of a cylindrical or elliptical pumping cavity divided into two halves by a glass ultra-violet filter which seals the cavity half containing the laser rod so that a suitable clear liquid coolant can circulate about the laser rod. The filter has a maximum transmission of 0À1% in the region of 4060 Š and a minimum transmission of 98% in the region of 5000 Š. In an alternative embodiment a transparent glass plate replaces the ultra-violet glass filter and the coolant fluid of a solution of sodium nitrate or potassium chromate is used as a filter of ultra-violet light.
