Lactam-N-carboxylic acid chlorides having 5 to 13 ring members are prepared by reaction of a 1-aza-2-etherified hydroxy-2-cycloalkene-1-carboxylic acid chloride with a hydrogen halide. Exemplified products are the N-carboxylic acid chlorides of caprolactam, capryl lactam and laurolactam.
