1,273,640. Proportioning and mixing flowing liquids. CRYOGENIC TECHNOLOGY Inc. 2 Sept., 1969 [18 Oct., 1968], No. 43476/69. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions F1 and G1] Apparatus for mixing liquids in flow in which the quantities of the respective constituents can be continuously changed during operation to control the total volume flow rate and composition of the mixture comprises a plurality of reservoirs as at 1-4 and peristaltic pumps 5-8 (see Figs. 8-11, not shown, and Division F1) discharging to a common manifold 13 and thence to a mixing device which may comprises restrictions (73, Fig. 8 not shown) in a flexible tube (72) the restrictions preferably having a flow area 15-40% of the tube cross-section. The pumps are driven by motors 21, 22 the speed of which is controlled by the photocells 34, 35 the amount of light falling on which is varied by an optical cam system 30 consisting of a rotating cylinder with an opaque background and circumferential light paths 32, 33 of varying width or density (see also Figs. 3-6, not shown, and Division G1). The two motors 21, 22 are each enabled to drive the pumps 5, 7 and 6, 8 successively by means of clutches 15, 17 actuated by cams 23, 26; the cams 23, 26 and light paths 32, 33 are formed to cause the apparatus to perform a desired programme. There may be two light paths and photocells associated with each motor so that two different programmes may be selected by switching. The apparatus may be used for the glycerolization and deglycerolization of red blood cells.
