Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of Formula I (wherein R is an alkylene group, a haloalkylene group, an aralkylene group or haloaralkylene group having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkylene portion of the group, X is Cl, Br or I, A is halomethyl-methylene group or a group, Y is an (-OH) group and Z is C1, Br or I or Y and Z taken together represent an epoxide link, and n is an integer of from 0 to 6 except that (i) when A is then Y and Z are taken together to represent an epoxide link, (ii) when Y is OH and Z is Cl, Br or I then A is a halomethyl-methylene group, and (iii) when A is a halomethyl-methylene group, R is a haloalkylene group and Y and Z are taken together to form an epoxide link then n is an integer from 2 to 6), are prepared by reacting, at 20‹ to 100‹ C. in the presence of a Lewis acid, a glycerine di-halohydrin with 0 to 6 moles of an alkylene oxide and then with at least one mole of an epihalohydrin, to give a compound I in which Y is OH and Z is Cl, Br or I, and, if desired, reacting this compound with 1 or 2 molar equivalents of a dehydrohalogenating agent to give compounds I in which Y and Z together form an epoxide group and A is a halomethyl-methylene or CH 2 = C< group, respectively. Compounds I in which A is a group and Y and Z together form an epoxide group, can also be prepared by reacting a compound I in which A is a halomethylmethylene group and Y and Z together form an epoxide group, with at least an equimolar amount of a dehydrohalogenating agent.
