Abstract
1488212 Esters of polyoxyalkylenes DOW CHEMICAL CO 20 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974 2 May 1974 (2)] 7213/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Esters have the formula wherein R is the residue after removal of n active hydrogen atoms from an initiator, RH n ; each R<SP>1</SP> is independently ethylene, trimethylene, tetramethylene, 1,2 - butylene, 2,2 - bis- (halomethyl) - 1,3 - propylene, phenylethylene or A being H, Cl, Br or OX; each X is independently H or the acyl radical of a carboxylic acid. There is a proviso that at least one R1 is 3- hydroxy-1,2-propylene and at least one R<SP>1</SP> is where X is the acyl radical of a carboxylic acid; m and n are integers such that the total number of R<SP>1</SP>O groups is at least 2. Typical initiators are water, alkylene glycols, glycerol, or bisphenol A. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a tert-alkyl glycidyl ether with initiator to prepare a polymer or copolymer (cf. Specification 1,267,259) and reacting further with a carboxylic acid or the anhydride or acyl halide thereof in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, e.g. an arylsulphonic acid. In an example triethylene glycol is reacted with a 50/50 molar mixture of tert-butyl glycidyl ether and propylene oxide and the resultant oligomer dealkylated and esterified with acrylic acid using an arylsulphonic acid catalyst.
