Abstract
1,273,557. Evaporators, multi-stage flash type. STRUTHERS SCIENTIFIC & INTERNATIONAL CORP. 14 Aug., 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 37254/68. Heading B1B. Liquid is evaporated from a solution by heating it and introducing the heated solution through pipe 17 into a rotating shell 10, which is divided by disk-shaped partitions 26 .. 29 into successive flash chambers 30 .. 33, wherein the centrifuged solution forms a ring-shaped layer 19 on the inner wall of the rotating shell, and flows from chamber to chamber through the gaps between the outer peripheries of the partitions and the inner wall, forming liquid-seals between the flash chambers. Liquid is evaporated from the solution in each chamber, and the vapours evolved are withdrawn through concentric pipes 20 .. 23 connected to suction devices 34 .. 37 which maintain the flash chambers at progressively reduced pressure. Shell 10 is mounted on collar 11, which is pressed into ball-bearing 12, and rotated by motor 16 and belt 15. The partitions 26 ... 29 may be stationary or rotary. Concentrated solution is flung through apertures 42 in end wall 25 into collector 43, and is withdrawn through pipe 44. The concentration of foaming solutions, e.g. coffee extract, is referred to.
