Abstract

1,273,476. Electrostatic loud-speakers. L. J. BOBB, and C. C. POND. 1 May, 1970 [1 May, 1969], No. 21099/70. Heading H4S. A tensioned membrane 7 (Fig. 4) bearing an electrically conductive coating is spaced from a perforated, electrically conductive, substantially rigid backing member 11 and a foam slab 16, e.g. of polyurethane, bears against at least part of the backing member 11 to impose damping action thereon. The foam slab 16 is preferably acoustically transparent and extends over the whole of the backing member 11. The backing member 11 may be made of a number of perforated plates joined by adhesive tape 14. Fig. 4 shows a push-pull arrangement in which two membranes 7 are sandwiched between two backing members 11. A foam slab 16 bears against each backing member 11. The two membranes 7 are clamped together between frames 5 to form a sub-assembly. Conductive spacers 6 between the membranes 7 serve for electrical connection. Bolted metal strips 17 clamp the foam slabs 16 against the backing members 11 to apply pressure thereto. The backing members 11 are thus mounted on the frame structure independently of the tensioning of the membranes 7 between the frames 5. A pattern of spacers 12, 15 is provided between each backing member 11 and the adjacent membrane 7 whereby the membranes 7 are clamped together where the spacers 12, 15 are provided.
