[Also in Division C1] A semi-conductive material for detecting and/or recording electromagnetic radiation has a magnetic permeability greater than 12, below the Curie point, and has the crystalline spinel structure MCr 2 S 4 where m is one or more of Cd, Zn, Hg, Mn, Fe<SP>II</SP>, Co, Mg, Ni, Pb, Cu<SP>I</SP>+Ga<SP>III</SP>/2, Cu<SP>I</SP>+In<SP>III</SP>/2, Cu<SP>I</SP>+Fe<SP>III</SP>/2, Ag<SP>I</SP>+In<SP>III</SP>/2 and Ag<SP>I</SP>+Fe<SP>III</SP>/2. The material may contain up to 10 mol. per cent of an N- or P-type semiconductor dope, e.g. In, Ga, Cu or Ag. Compounds of formula MCr 2 S 4 may be made semiconductive without use of a dope by heating to introduce S-vacancies (resulting in N-type) or by heating in a S-rich atmosphere to introduce metal vacancies (resulting in P-type). In an example, a single crystal of P-type CaCr 2 S 4 is exposed to light at 4À2‹ and 77‹ K. to produce permanent and temporary changes in magnetic permeability and coercive force.
