1,273,299. Continuous casting. KUIBYSHEVSKY METALLURGICHESKY ZAVOD IMENI V.I. LENINA. 24 June, 1970, No. 30702/70. Heading B3F. In mouldless continuous casting, similar to that described in Specification 1,157,977, in which molten metal before solidification is confined to a required cross-sectional shape by a magnetic field of an inductor 2, in order to restore the transverse dimensions of the molten metal, as they deviate from desired values, the current in the inductor is varied. The desired cross-sectional shape and size are obtained when, in the liquid metal, the electromagnetic forces and the outward pressure due to head of metal are balanced. The inductor voltage being kept constant, by negative voltage feed back, e.g. by a signal from a voltmeter 10, any increase in the height of the liquid metal causes the resistance of the inductor-metal system to decrease and thus increase the inductor current so that there is a self-righting tendency to restrict the metal cross-section. To augment this, a float 13 indicating the liquid metal level provides information for automatic modification of the inductor current. The voltage of the inductor 2 is stabilized by a signal from the meter 10 and a reference from a voltage setter 7, a correction signal resulting from these being passed to a power amplifier 12 by an adding device 9 to determine the supply to a field winding 5 of a frequency changer 4 connected via a transformer 6 to the inductor 2. The value of the metal level becomes, in a converter 14, an electric signal which after modification in units 15, 16 is fed to the amplifier 12.
