Abstract

1,273,176. Scanning apparatus. MULLARD Ltd. 14 Aug., 1969, No. 40738/69. Heading H4F. A mirror and torsion wire combination M1 is mounted on a body CA for oscillation about a first axis of the body at the natural resonance frequency determined by the wire and moment of inertia of the mirror, and the body itself is oscillated about an axis transverse to the first axis, thus performing line and frame scans respectively, the frame frequency being less than the line, or natural resonance, frequency, and being related to and synchronized with the line frequency in that the oscillation of the body is timed from the oscillation of the mirror. As shown, a vane secured to the mirror swings in the gap of a vane switched oscillator VSO to produce an output therefrom once per cycle of oscillation of the mirror. The output is shaped and amplified and fed to an electromagnet which couples with an armature on the mirror to sustain oscillation at line frequency. The output is also fed via a switch ES to a multi-pole stepping motor driving the body CA by an eccentric or cam arrangement. Such apparatus may be used in infra-red thermography employing a single cell detector, the output from which may be fed to a cathode ray tube having a long persistance phosphor. Line and frame frequencies of 96 Hz and 1 or 2 Hz respectively are mentioned.
