A seat backrest includes a plurality of main springs 5 at least one of which is secured to a secondary spring 7 which is adjustably bowed to vary the stress in the springs 5, 7 by a mechanism 9 comprising a member 23 rotatable by a knob 35 and having oppositely threaded ends 25, 27 engaged in nuts 20, 21 respectively secured to first and second slides 15, 17 to which the opposite ends of the secondary spring 7 are respectively secured, the first slide 15 being engaged with a first guide 11 carried by one side of the backrest frame 3 and the second slide 17 being engaged both with the first guide 11 and with a second guide 11 carried by the opposite side of the frame 3. Stops 21 limit displacement of the slides 15, 17 towards each other.
