Abstract
1,272,834. Automatic control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. May 27, 1969 [June 24, 1968], No.26744/69. Heading G3R. In a "high reliability" control system having at least three parallel channels which perform a common control function on a common input and are connected to means which produces a desired output despite malfunctions in one or more of the individual channels, separate "computer means" determine successively whether each channel is in proper working order and gives an indication if it is not and/or initiates a control action. The invention is shown applied to a system having four channels, one of which is normally switched out by switches 88, 128 but which is switched in by the computer to replace any of the other three channels detected as faulty. Sensors 52 ... 58 in a controlled zone 50 produce signals which are "conditioned" at 62 ... 68 and are connectible by switches 82 ... 88 to a "restorer" 90. This averages those two signals which are closest to each other (of the three which are used) to produce an output, rejecting the third, or the signals may be digital on or off and the output corresponds to the majority. The average signal is compared with a reference at 94 and any error is applied to four controllers 102 ... 108 connectible to a second "restorer" 130 through switches 122 ... 128. The output of this restorer controls the sensed parameter by means 134. The computer 150 periodically and successively examines the signals in the two sets of four channels and if any depart from a predetermined value or range operates the appropriate switches to disconnect the faulty channel and connect the spare, giving an indication that it has done so. The controlled parameter may be temperature, the means 134 comprising a rheostat in a resistance heating circuit, liquid level, 134 then comprising a valve, or a parameter of a nuclear reactor, 134 then being means to position control rods. The system may be used with one having a plurality of restorers, each monitered by the computer, and may include combinations of electrical or fluidic apparatus.
