A visual device in the form of a coiled wire of platinum/rhodium or nickel/chromium is mounted on a burner of a cooking appliance so that when the burner is alight, the burner flame impinges on the wire causing it to glow brightly. The coiled wire is mounted on a frame which is detachably mounted e.g. by a screw or magnet, on the burner head or the surface of the cooking appliance. A number of coiled wires may be mounted substantially transversely to the flame axis, the number of wires glowing indicating the extent of the flame.
