Abstract

1,272,588. Crash barriers. BRITISH ROPES Ltd. 22 Oct., 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 42080/ 68. Heading E1G. A semi-rigid crash barrier rail which flexes progressively on impact comprises at least one hollow metallic or non-metallic element 1 reinforced by a non-bonded single or multiple metallic or non-metallic strand 2. The rail may have a plane or corrugated face and as shown comprises a pair of identical elements 1 interfitted and secured together by rivets 8. The rail may be supported on posts, Fig. 9, and slit at 11, 12 to allow deflection to a ground anchorage. Each element 1 has a central bore, a fin 5 and spreadable flaps 6, 7, and may be of aluminium, rubber, or plastics with or without metallic fillers, and abrasive coatings or fluorescent pigments. The strand 2 comprises a cable of parallel or helically-wound metallic and/or plastics strands. In modifications (a) the flaps are of different lengths and provided with interlocking materials; (b) the rectangular fin is replaced by triangular or rounded formations; (c) the rivets 8 are replaced by adhesive or welding.
