Abstract
1,272,414. Scarfing. G.K.N. ROLLED & BRIGHT STEEL Ltd. 30 April, 1970 [17 April, 1869 (2)], Nos. 19654/69 and 19655/69. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A hot metal workpiece is scarfed by a plasma torch. In one embodiment the billet is scarfed whilst passing from a preheating furnace to a rolling mill by a plasma torch operated in the non-transferred mode and using A, N 2 , H 2 , A/H 2 or 70% N 2 /30% H 2 gas. A subsidiary gas such as an inert gas, oxygen or air is used to facilitate removal of the molten metal. When a wide billet is scarfed the torch is oscillated transversely of the billet or a plurality of torches arranged side by side are used (Fig. 4, not shown). All four sides of the billet may be simultaneously scarfed. In another embodiment the torch is operated in a non-transferred mode when it is not scarfing the billet. As soon as the billet moves into the operative position, the torch is automatically changed to the transferred mode whereupon an oxidizing gas such as oxygen or an inert plasma gas is used. When scarfing has been initiated, the scarfing may be continued using oxygen or an oxygen-propane mixture. When three or multiples of three plasma torches operating in a transferred mode are used, a D.C. supply is connected between the cathode and nozzle of the torch and a three phase A.C. supply connected between the nozzle and billet, one phase to each torch.
