Abstract

1,272,334. Controlling burners. SIMICON CO. 14 May, 1970 [15 Oct., 1969], No. 23439/70. Heading F4T. A combustion control device for a furnace comprises a burner 34 control means connected to the A.C. mains, e.g. a source of 120 V., a low voltage (8 V.) control circuit including a cadmium sulphide flame detector 32, a semiconductor device in the form of silicon controlled rectifier SCR1, to actuate the control means in response to a signal from the flame detector 32, a bimetallic lockout safety switch 20 (see Specification 1,272,335) for interrupting current flow through the rectifier SCR1, a triac Q1 and a thermostat 24, a reed switch 25 having normally open contacts actuating the burner control means and being controlled by a pair of electrically insulated coils RC1, RC2 having additive flux linkages whereby energization of both coils RC1, RC2 is necessary to effect closing of switch 20 and continued energization of one coil RC1, by current rectified by diode D1 and capacitor C2, maintains switch closure. When thermostat 24 senses a demand for heat, flux is established in coil RC1 and the gate 60 of silica controlled rectifier SCR1 is triggered, and if the flame detector 32 senses no flame, current is riot shunted from gate 60, and silicon controlled rectifier SCR1 conducts, coil RC2 is energized to close contacts 26, 28 of reed switch 25, and triac Q1 passes power to burner 34. If detector 32 continues to sense no flame current in heater coil 23 effects cut-out of switch 20 after about 15 sec., but if flame is sensed, current will be shunted from gate 60 and cut-out will not occur. The device will fail-safe upon circuit failure.
