Abstract

127,212. Patch, H. M. Jan. 14, 1919. Vehicular lanterns.-Head-light reflectors, designed more particularly for automobiles, are constructed with a number of paraboloid segments arranged to direct the light rays on to the roadway without causing a glare in the eyes of approaching drivers and pedestrians. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one form of reflector, and Fig. 4 a vertical longitudinal section of a modification. The upper half of the reflector shown in Fig. 3 is a half-paraboloid A, and the lower half of the reflector is formed of a central lower segment B and two lateral segments C. The axis of the segment B and that of the segment A are in an horizontal plane through the lower edge of -the segment A, but the segment B is set forward so that its focus is in front of the focus of the segment A. The segments C are so placed that their foci c are lower than the axis of segment A and approximately in a transverse vertical plane through the focus of A. Between the foci of A and B is placed the source of light. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the upper and side segments are similar in form and arrangement to the corresponding segments shown in Fig. 3, but the lower segment is formed in two parts B<1>, B<2>, of which B<1> is situated above and B<2> below a hypothetical paraboloidal surface W, similar to the upper segment A<1>.
