A vacuum degassing apparatus comprises a hermetically sealed container arranged for connection to a vacuum source, a spiral channel 2, one end of which is higher than the other, a first pipe 3 extending downwardly from one end of the channel for drawing molten metal to be degassed upwardly into the channel, and a second pipe 4 extending downwardly from the other end of the channel for discharging degassed metal.
