A press for inserting multi-nail plate fasteners 16 into timber members 17 to form trusses, comprises a stationary lower plates 2, a frame comprising two transverse beams 12 extending between end frames 8 and movable on rails 3 along the lower platen, an upper platen 5, and means including levers 22 for supporting the upper platen on the frame and for moving said upper platen towards and away from the lower platen. The means further includes a double acting ram 19. Each lever 22 is pivoted at one end to the frame and is operatively connected at the other end to the piston 20 of the ram. A pressure pad 49 is provided on each lever, and inclined surfaces 29 supporting rollers 28 are provided on the upper platen. In operation extension of the ram causes pads 49 to impart a force to the upper platen via the rollers and surfaces 29. When the ram is retracted the upper platens is lifted by angle brackets 50 engaging resilient washers 51 on rods 32 pivotally connected to the platen 5. The beams 12 are mounted between the ends of pairs of channel members 39 which are mounted for vertical movement on the end frames. Adjustment of the lower pair of members 39 of each end frame is effected by rotating handle 13 attached to screw 41 threadedly engaged with a bore in plate 40 after resilient members 14 have been removed, rod 61 placed below the ram and the ram extended. Movement of the beams upwardly during a pressing operation is absorbed by the resilient members 14, and movement of the end frames upwardly during a pressing operation is prevented by pairs of plates 10 engaging under rails 3. The platen 2 is formed of reinforced concrete mounted on a sand fill with a polythene sheet placed between the platen and the sand fill. An operator's platform 58 is provided. A motor 57 and pump 56 supply fluid to the ram 19. The frame is driven along the rails by a motor (59) (Fig. 2, not shown) via a reduction gearing and a chain and sprocket mechanism. Each lever 22 is V-shaped in plan (Fig. 2, not shown).
