Abstract

1314398 Apparatus for driving nail plates into timber components; work-tables BEVES MFG Ltd 17 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 58717/70 Headings B4C and B4X Apparatus for fabricating wooden roof trusses and the like by forcing nail plates into prepositioned wooden members at butt joints thereof, comprises a beam 2; a press 1 having a lower platen 14, and an upper platen 12 mounted on the rod of a pneumatic or hydraulic ram 11, the press being movable, manually or by drive means, along the beam; and a support table 4 for supporting wooden members and nail plates at a butt joint, the table being adjustable along the beam. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the beam is mounted at one end on a pivot 22 and at the other end on a trolley 23, the wheels 24 of which run on an arcuate track 25. Motion of the beam may be effected manually or by means driving the wheels 24. In an alternative arrangement each end of the beam is mounted on a trolley 23, and the trolleys run on tracks transverse to the longitudual axis of the beam, movement being effected manually or by means of driving wheels 24. The table 4 comprises a platen 20 resiliently mounted in a frame 4a. When the ram 11 is operated, platen 20 will be forced downwardly against its resilient mounting until it meets the platen 14. The platen 20 is provided with timber clamping means (not shown). A plurality of tables and/or presses may be carried on the beam. The apparatus of Fig. 3 included three beams, each having a press 1 and tables 4, arranged with their axes each lying on a respective side of a triangle and with the tables 4 being appropriately positioned to support the members of a roof truss at the butt joints. One beam 28 is mounted on trolleys 23 which run on tracks 31 and the other two beams 26, 27 are mounted as in Fig. 1. A pin 33 coacts with apertures in track 25 (31) to lock the associated beam in a selected position. The rams of the presses of Fig. 3 may be powered by a common power unit, but preferably each press is powered by its own power unit.
