Abstract

1,271,668. Refrigeration apparatus. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 20 Aug., 1969 [20 Aug., 1968], No. 41440/69. Heading F4H. [Also in Division C3] A cooling device comprises at least one layer of a hydrophilic polymeric gel which does not become liquid at temperatures below 35‹ C. including an inert flexible reinforcement, said layer or layers being enclosed by a flexible packaging material. Adjacent layers of the polymeric gel may have a separator therebetween. The hydrophilic gel may be produced from polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylamide, anionic polyacrylamide, polyvinyl alcohol, a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a vinyl ether, polyacrylic acid, a copolymer of ethylene and maleic anhydride, polyvinyl ether, dextran, gelatine, hydroxypropyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethylcarboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, propylene glycol alginate, sodium alginate, polyethylene imine, polyvinyl-n-butyl pyridinium bromide, polyproline, starch, casein, protein, polymethacrylic acid, polyvinyl sulphonic acid, polystyrene sulphonic acid, polyvinylamine, poly- 4-vinyl pyridine, polymerized monoesters of olefinic acids, polymerized diesters of olefinic acids and co-polymers of acrylamide, the preferred gel being made cross-linking by irradiation an aqueous solution of a polyalkylene oxide. The flexible reinforcement may be composed of a polyamide, a polyester, a polyethylene oxide or cellulose and may be in the form of a woven or non-woven material, a webbing, an expanded mesh or a film; alternatively, the flexible reinforcement may comprise fibres randomly embedded in the gel. Specified packaging materials are commercially available films and laminates of polyethylene or polypropylene with a fabric, a polymeric foam or paper. The separators may comprise films or foils of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate or metal; alternatively, a separator may be formed by applying a non-adhesive material, e.g. a silicone or cetyl alcohol to a gel layer. The cooling device may be made by cutting a gel in the form of a continuous tape and including the flexible reinforcement into discrete lengths, stacking the cut lengths and enclosing them in a flexible packaging material which is then sealed.
