Abstract

1,271,521. Purifying chlorine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Aug., 1969 [11 Sept., 1968], No. 43146/68. Heading B1L. In purifying impure moist chlorine gas by compressing it before drying the gas is drawn at 70‹C from an electrolytic cell (not shown) via a pipe 1 to a rotary screw compressor 2 driven by a motor 3 via a gear box 4. The gas is compressed to 50-250 p.s.i.a. whilst being irrigated by cool brine or calcium chloride fed via a pipe 13 from a ring packed cooling section 8. The compressed gas and irrigating brine is discharged via a pipe 5 to a brine collecting section 7 of a column 6. The compressed gas is then cooled in the section 8 and any entrained brine or water &c mist removed by a polyester filter 9 before passing the gas to a bubble plate section 10 where it is dried with Conc. H 2 SO 4 . Acid mist is removed by a glass fibre filter 11 before the dry cell gas is withdrawn via pipe 20 at 30‹C and 115 p.s.i.a. Cool brine is fed to the ring packed section 8 via a pipe 12 and brine collecting in section 7 is conveyed via a pipe 14 to a flash vessel 15 where any recovered chlorine is returned via the pipe 17 to the compressor 2. A pipe 16 discharges brine to a drain or to the electrolytic cell. Chlorine gas released from the conc. H 2 SO 4 by a flash vessel 18 is returned via pipes 19 and 1 to the compressor 2. The compressor is made of or lined with titanium or an alloy thereof. The bubble plate section 10 has trays made of plastics, ceramic material, glass, or plastics reinforced with asbestos.
