Abstract
1,271,506. Fermenters. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd. June 24, 1969 [July 26, 1968], No. 35717/68. Heading C6F. A fermenter has a rotatable stirrer located in the lower half to stir liquid broth, and a rotatable paddle in the upper half for driving foam generated above the surface of the liquid broth back into the liquid broth. Stirrer and paddle may be of identical form and mounted on the same power-driven shaft. The paddle may be a flat bladed disc turbine type impeller having a diameter 0À25-0À5 that of the fermenter. The depth of the paddle in the liquid and the rotational speed determine whether the foam is returned to the body of the liquid through the central part of the paddle (i) in simple circulation or (ii) by a vortex action at the surface. The depth of the paddle below the liquid level (in use) should not be more than twice the paddle diameter. The required liquid level in relation to the position of the paddle may be maintained automatically. An example is directed to the use of the fermenter in the cultivation of the yeast Candida lipolytica in the presence of a mixed straight chain paraffin substrate.
