Apparatus for the introduction of solid material in discrete form into a metal melt, comprises a flow pipe 2 which receives the molten metal and an admission pipe 3 for introducing the material into the molten metal in the flow pipe, the axis of the inlet end part of the flow pipe and the axis of at least the discharge end part of the admission pipe being parallel and eccentric to the axis of a portion of the flow pipe into which the admission pipe discharges the discrete solid material into the metal melt. One or more vents 13 can be provided to permit gases to be discharged from the apparatus.
