Abstract

1,271,239. Lasers. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 14 Aug., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 42228/68. Heading H1C. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for continuously measuring the power of a beam of photons, electrons or ions comprises a window 6 which transmits the beam with absorption of a known proportion thereof, the heat generated by the absorption being measured by circulating a fluid through a chamber 8 surrounding the window, and measuring the inlet and outlet temperatures by means of thermistors 14, 16. The invention is described with reference to a laser 4 having a semi-transparent window 6 of germanium. The window 6 acts as one of the mirrors of the laser, the laser output being transmitted through the window. Water from a constant pressure source is circulated through the chamber 8 and from the temperature difference measured by the thermistors 14, 16 in the steady state the power of the beam may be found. The absorption coefficient of the window 6 depends in practice on its absolute temperature, and to this end a thermistor 18 is provided to measure this and used to convert the calculated power value to allow for temperature variations of the window 6.
