Abstract

127,095. Davis, F. W. May 21, 1918. Potassium and sodium salts. - Flue gases containing steam, such as the gases from kilns in which wet slurry is burnt in the manufacture of Portland cement, or from kilns or furnaces used for dehydrating aluminium hydroxide, are passed through an apparatus such as that shown in the Figure. The gases are drawn by a fan F through a chamber B, in which dust &c. is deposited, and then through a chamber C, where they are washed by sprays of water issuing from a pipe, as shown, the quantity of water employed being so regulated that the temperature of the gases is reduced below the boiling-point of water, but no substantial quantity of the steam therein is condensed. The gases and steam pass through baffle-plates E to the fan and exit shaft G. The soluble matters such as the salts of sodium and potassium, are dissolved in the spray water, which collects in the bottom of the chamber C and passes thence to a filter H and cooler J. from which it is returned by a pump K back to the spray pipe, or, when sufficiently concentrated, it is passed to a tank 0, in which the solids in solution crystallize. The apparatus may be fitted with a thermometer for indicating the temperature of the gases; and the chamber C may be fitted with an inspection window and with a water gauge by which the depth of liquid in the bottom of the chamber may be ascertained.
