Mostly novel compounds of formula where R 1 and R 2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy or optionally substituted phenyl or phenoxy, or together form part of a condensed 6-membered aromatic carbocyclic ring which may be substituted or a 5- to 7-membered heterocyclic ring which may be substituted, are prepared by reacting a quinone of formula where one X is halogen and the other is H or halogen with mercaptoacetic acid in the presence of a tertiary amino compound, and adding an anhydride of. a C 2-4 aliphatic carboxylic acid to the resulting reaction mixture. The products are useful as plant protection agents.
