Abstract
1,270,714. Automatic control of paper making. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. July 2, 1969 [July 3, 1968], No.33303/69. Heading G3R. In a paper making process, a continuous signal, dependent on the moisture content of the paper stock produced, intermittently adjusts one process variable to maintain the moisture content at a desired value and the average value of the variable over a plurality of such adjustments controls another process variable to maximize the amount of paper produced. In a paper-making machine, Fig. 2, a mixture of pulp and liquid is deposited from outlet 204 of a headbox 202 on to an endless belt 206 which is driven by a motor 208 and carries the mixture over drying cylinders, such as 214, heated by steam from a boiler 216 so that finished paper may be wound up on a reel 212. The steam pressure applied to the drying cylinder is controlled by a valve 218 and measured by a detector 24 signals from which are applied to a controller 16 which computes what changes in speed should result in the correct degree of dryness and effects these changes intermittently by controlling motor 208. The actual degree of dryness is measured by a detector 18 signals from which are also applied to controller 16 which computes dryness error and corrects it by intermittent control of valve 218 at a frequency which is greater than that at which the speed of motor 208 is adjusted.
