Abstract

1,270,475. Disazo compounds. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. 31 Dec., 1969 [9 Jan., 1969; 7 Nov., 1969], No. 63498/69. Heading C4P. The invention comprises disazo pigments of the general formula wherein R 1 represents an aryl residue with the sulphonamide group ortho or para to the azo group; R 1 represents a naphthalene residue in which the azo, hydroxyl and -CO- group are in the 1, 2, 3 position respectively; R 3 represents an arylene residue; R 4 represents an aralkyl or aryl residue and R 5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl aralkyl or aryl residue. The pigments may be prepared by (a) condensing a carboxylic acid halide of the formula with an arylene diamine in a molar ratio of 2:1; or (b) coupling a diazo or diazoamino compound of an arylamine of the formula with a 2,3-hydroxy-naphthoic acid arylamide of formula in a molar ratio of 2:1. The acid halides of Formula II above may be obtained by coupling the appropriate diazotized aminoarylsulphonamide with a 2,3-hydroxy naphthoic acid and treating the product with a phosphorous halide or thionyl chloride. The pigments give orange, red and violet shades on rayon, viscose, polyamide, polyurethane or cellulose ester spinning compositions and may also be used in the manufacture of lacquers and printing inks.
