Abstract

1,270,328. Grafted ethylene copolymers. LEUNA-WERKE "WALTER ULBRICHT" VEB. 15 Aug., 1969, No. 40942/69. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is prepared by causing an ethylene copolymer, which has been produced by copolymerizing ethylene with a comonomer (A) in a reactor at a pressure above 500 atmospheres and a temperature above 100‹ C. in the presence of a free radical initiator, and expanded at a pressure between 100 and 350 atmospheres and has had its temperature adjusted to 50‹ to 200‹ C., to react with a further quantity of comonomer (A) or with a further comonomer (B), optionally with the addition of a further amount of initiator. Specified comonomers are vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride and styrene. Suitable catalysts are oxygen, peroxides and azo compounds. A chain transfer agent e.g. hydrogen, ethane, propane or carbon tetrachloride may be used in the preparation of the ethylene copolymer and/or the graft polymerization step. In the examples, (a) vinyl acetate is grafted on to ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, optionally in the presence of tertbutyl perbenzoate; (b) ethyl acrylate is grafted on to ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer in the presence of hydrogen and (c) methyl methacrylate is grafted on to ethylene-methyl methacrylate copolymer in the presence of propane and azodiisobutyronitrile.
