Abstract

127,031. Berger, E. E. F. Nov. 24, 1916, [Convention date]. Meteorological conditions, local, apparatus for influencing.-Consists in producing fumes in the atmosphere by the combustion of mixtures which produce anhydrous chlorides of metals or non- metals, the fumes being for use as military screens and clouds, for simulating the visible effects of fires and explosions, and for destroying vermin and noxious matter. The mixtures comprises the combination of (1) a metallic or non-metallic chloride, formed with a relative slight liberation of heat, or a chlorinated derivative of a hydrocarbon, with (2) a metal, a non-metal, a carbide, a silicide, a sulphide, a mixture of an oxide and a reducing-agent or a mixture of an oxide, an excess of reducing-agent and an oxidizer. Combustion is started by a heating-mixture such as an aluminothermic mixture, or minium and aluminium or calcium silicide. Examples of suitable mixtures are : (1) ferric chloride and magnesium, (2) hexachlorethane and calcium silicide, (3) hexachlorethane, an oxide of iron, and aluminium, (4) tetrachlorethane, zinc oxide, zinc dust, calcium silicide, and sodium chlorate.
