Abstract

1,270,292. Making polymethyl methacrylate bars. RUMANIA MINISTERUL INDUSTRIEIUSOARE MINISTER OF. 23 April, 1969, No. 20833/69. Heading C3P. Polymethyl methacrylate bars are prepared by prepolymerizing methyl methacrylate monomer to a monomer conversion of from 40-50% at a temperature of 80-90‹ C., and thereafter completing polymerization of the resulting prepolymer in a water-permeable, bar-shaped cell made of plastics material, the cell being immersed in water at a temperature of about 20‹ C. (e.g. 18-20‹ C.). The cell may be formed from porous polyethylene or cellulose acetate. In an example, the prepolymerization is effected with azoisobutyronitrile initiator, and polymerization is completed using a benzoyl peroxide/dimethyl aniline/cobalt naphthenate initiator system.
