Abstract
1,269,964. Polymer dispersions. BALM PAINTS Ltd. 26 Aug., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 42384/69. Headings C3G and C3P. A dispersion of a polymer in an inert organic liquid in which the polymer is insoluble is prepared by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the liquid, in the presence of a polymeric dispersion stabilizer, in a two-stage reaction consisting of a seed stage and a feed stage wherein (1) in the seed stage there is added to the organic liquid the monomer and copolymerizable polymeric stabilizer (having at least one ethylenic double bond per molecule) in a weight ratio of from 1 : 10 to 15 : 1, the amount of monomer added being from 7-70% by weight of the total monomer used, (2) in the feed there is added the remaining monomer and optionally additional polymeric stabilizer (which preferably has no ethylenic double bonds), and (3) the total weight of polymeric stabilizer added is from 0À6-50% by weight of the disperse polymer formed. (The polymeric stabilizers used are those which associate with the disperse polymer and comprise one or more components which are solvated by the organic liquid and provide around the disperse polymer particles a stabilizing steric barrier). The examples use as copolymerizable stabilizers the products obtained by condensing poly( 12-hydroxystearic acid) with glycidyl methacrylate, then copolymerizing with methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, and finally reacting with methacrylic acid to introduce polymerizable double bonds; and as additional (non-copolymerizable) stabilizers similar products as for the copolymerizable stabilizers except that the final methacrylic acid reactant is replaced by p-nitrobenzoic acid. In the examples dispersions of the following polymers in liquid hydrocarbons are prepared in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile, octyl mercaptan and also, in some cases, butyl benzyl phthalate: (a) polymethyl methacrylate, (b) methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer (whose acid groups are subsequently reacted with epoxide groups in the additional stabilizer), (c) methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate copolymer, (d) methylmethacrylate-n-butyl methacrylate copolymer, and (e) methyl methacrylate-2-ethyl hexyl acrylate copolymer.
