Abstract

1,269,953. Riveting. BIFURCATED ENG. Ltd. 1 July, 1969 [13 June, 1969], No. 43737/71. Divided out of 1,269,952. Heading B3U. [Also in Division F2] To set a tubular rivet 1 to nip workpieces 12, 13 together, a hollow bifurcated rivet 28 is inserted into the bore 4 of the rivet 1 and its legs 33, 34 forced outwardly by driving a pin 31 into the bore 29 of the bifurcated rivet to expand the rivet 1 at 18. The head 32 of the pin 31 is countersunk into the head 30 of the rivet 28 which is in turn countersunk into the head 3 of the rivet 1. The rivet 1 is closed at its tip 5. The bifurcated rivet 28 has a bore which stops short of the slot 35 forming the bifurcation. This slot may taper outwardly, as shown, or inwardly (Fig. 3, not shown) towards the tip of the rivet. The bifurcated rivet with the slot as shown may have the bore 29 opening into the slot, with an internal shoulder at the intersection.
