A composition for washing textile fibres especially polyamide and cellulose fibres comprises (A) 0.001 to 5% of C1-C4 alkyl biguanide especially methyl biguanide, (B) 0À1 to 30% of at least one compound from alkali metal, NH 4 or organic NH 4 salts of aminopolycarboxylic acids and aminopolyphosphonic acids, (C) 0.001 to 1.5% of an optical brightener which is a 1,3- diarylpyrazoline, (D) at least one compound from anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric detergents, (E) one or more inorganic builder salts. Optical brighteners (C) have the formula in which Ar and Ar<SP>1</SP> each represent phenyl, diphenyl or naphthyl which may be substituted by OH, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, NH 2 , alkylamino, acylamino, carboxyl, sulphonic acid, sulphonamide or halogen. Other optical brighteners may be present. Builder salts (E) comprise alkali metal triphosphates and polyphosphates, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, alkali metal bicarbonates, carbonates, borates and hydroxides, lactic acid, citric acid. The pH of the compositions may be from 6 to 12. The compositions may comprise 5-40% of a per compound or mixture thereof with a bleaching agent activator or stabilizer e.g. magnesium silicate. Sodium perborate, alkali metal percarbonates, alkali metal perphosphates, urea perhydrate, organic per-acids and hydrogen peroxide are suitable. Optional ingredients are (a) enzymes e.g. proteases, lipases and amylases; (b) antifoaming agents e.g. saturated fatty acids and their alkali metal salts; (c) sodium cellulose glycollate; (d) synthetic polymers containing free carboxyl groups; (e) solution aids; (f) fillers, dyes, perfumes and bactericides. The compositions may be liquid, pastes or solids. The methyl biguanide may be dissolved or dispersed in a solvent and sprayed on to the spray-dried powder or part thereof in order to prevent thermal decomposition of the biguanide during spray-drying. The solvent may be water, an aqueous detergent solution or a liquid non- ionic detergent. Alternatively, the methyl biguanide may be dissolved in a melt of sodium sulphate.
