Abstract

1355855 Bleaching compositions PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 5 Oct 1971 [7 Oct 1970] 46264/71 Heading DIP [Also in Division C5] A bleaching composition comprises (a) from 2 to 98% by weight of a per acid or a mixture of a peroxygen compound and an activator therefor e.g. phthalic or maleic anhydride, which mixture will form the per-acid in aqueous solution, the anhydride corresponding to said per-acid being cyclic and having a double bond between the carbon atoms in α, α' position to the two carbonyl groups and (b) a sequestering agent in at least a minimum defined amount. Specified peroxygen compounds are sodium perborate, percarbonates, perortho-, perpyro- and perpoly-phosphates, peroxyhydrates and peroxide-urea adducts. The compositions may also contain (i) anionic, non-ionic, ampholytic and zwitterionic detergents lists of which are specified, (ii) organic and inorganic builders e.g. alkali metal carbonates, phosphates, polyphosphates, sulphates and silicates and alkali metal, ammonium, and substituted ammonium polyphosphonates, polyacetates and salts of polymers of itaconic, maleic, fumaric and mesaconic acid, (iii) enzymes e.g. proteases and amylases and (iv) brighteners. The sequestrants may be of the formulae: wherein m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, R' is an alkylene phosphonic acid, alkylene-carboxylic acid or hydroxyalkyl group and R" is a group R', H or OH; or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof. The bleaching solutions are used at temperatures up to 89‹C. The compositions are used to treat cotton and polyester.
