In a two-bed flat knitting machine wherein the cam carriage 11 is traversed along rails 14 e.g. by a chain and has at least one driver block 17 housing drive plungers 18 which when operative drive one or more bodies 16 slidable along guide bars 15 and supporting yarn carriers YC, the plungers being influenced by self hold solenoids 19 to which brief pulses are passed during the end of each traverse of the carriage. Plungers 18 engage abutments 16a, 16b actuated through levers 14a by solenoids 19 which are controlled from a band of punched cards 21 carried on a square drum 42 or a tape which produce brief pulses of appropriate polarity. The solenoids 19 are wired to contact elements 22, e.g. spring steel leaves, which engage stationary elements 23 at the ends of the machine for sufficient time to pass pulses. Elements 23 may be plated with rhodium over nickel. Solenoids 19 are mounted upright and the armatures 19a are moved downwards to their self held position and permitted to move upwards when de-magnetised. As shown, eight solenoids 19 are arranged in two transverse parallel spaced series. At the end of each traverse of cam carriage 11, drum 42 is moved forwards into engagement with pins 41 so that pins opposite holes in the cards 21 are unaffected while those opposite unpunched parts are pushed to actuate micro switches e.g. of the single pole changeover type.
