Abstract

1,268,931. Moulding containers. P.R.B. S.A. 14 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 10889/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C3 and F3] A combustible cartridge case comprising a container of bonded fibrous material having dispersed therethrough in the interstices of the bonded fibre matrix, from 1-70% by weight, based on the weight of the container, of a high energy, heat resistant, thermally stable crystalline explosive, e.g. PETN, HMX, RDX, DATB, TADB, or tetryl. The crystalline explosive may be coated with a cationic material such as polyacrylonitrile or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The fibrous material includes cellulose, polyester and polyamide fibres. The fibres may be coated with sodium carboxymethylcellulose which is an anionic material. The fibres are also treated with a binder which is the reaction product of polyethyleneimine and oxalic, maleic, malonic, adipic or sebacic acid, the product having been treated with epichlorohydrin prior to use. The cartridge case is made by forming an aqueous slurry containing a fibrous material and a binding agent, dispersing throughout the slurry the crystalline explosive, felting the slurry on a mould to form the container, and drying the container so formed. The mould is introduced into the slurry under internal vacuum and the formed container is removed by reverse pressurization. The crystalline explosive is added to the fibrous slurry in the form of an aqueous dispersion which includes the cationic material. The anionic material is contained in the fibrous or explosive slurry.
