The invention comprises a process for making the crude title compound by contacting pmethylsulphonylbenzaldehyde with an alkali metal salt of glycine in an alcohol solvent using 2 moles of the aldehyde per mole of glycine. The threo rich compound can be isolated by acidifying the crude product to precipitate unreacted aldehyde (remove by filtration) and neutralizing the filtrate.
