Abstract
1,256,847. Tetronic acid. LONZA Ltd. 27 May, 1970 [28 May, 1969], No. 25354/70. Heading C2C. Tetronic acid or its salts are produced by reacting a γ-monochloro acetoacetic ester in an aromatic hydrocarbon with an aromatic amine at reflux temperature to form the corresponding #-arylamino crotonic. acid lactone of formula and converting this with aqueous alkali into a salt of tetronic acid; optionally liberating the free acid by treatment with an aqueous mineral acid and isolating it by vacuum sublimation under pressures below 0À5 mm. Hg and temperatures of 95-100 C.
