Abstract
1,268,477. Chamfering tablets. SHIONOGI & CO. Ltd. 30 June, 1970 [30 June, 1969; 28 Aug., 1969; 11 May, 1970], No. 31748/70. Heading A5B. [Also in Divisions B3 and B5] An apparatus for chamfering circular tablets comprises at least one member 1 having a grinding or abrading surface, and at least one guiding member 2 arranged against the surface along a line which intersects the direction of movement at an angle other than a right angle, the grinding member having an inlet 27 and outlet 28 for the tablets and groove sections 21, 23 facing the grinding or abrading surface and arranged to present the circular edges of the tablets to the surface. The tablets may be formed in a tableting press and have a circular shape with convex faces and, after chamfering, have an ellipsoid or spherical shape. The grinding or abrading surface may be formed as a file of stainless or tool steel chromium plated or be any roughened surface. The surface may be formed on a disc 1, and the guiding member 2 consists of a curved member having a tubular section 22 joining the guide sections 21, 23. Tablets are fed into the inlet 27 of the guiding member and are carried along the member by contact with the disc, the tablets being chamfered along one edge while in the section 21, and tilted while in the tubular section 22 so that their other edges are chamfered while in the section 23. The inclination of the tablets while in the sections 21, 23 may be varied so that the tablets have rounded chamfers. In another embodiment, the grinding or abrading surface is provided by two annular discs, the guiding member being straight; the two discs may be in the same or parallel planes and rotate about parallel axes in the same direction. Alternatively, the discs may be arranged to rotate about the same axis and be arranged one within the other, the guiding member being curved. In a similar embodiment, the grinding surfaces face one another so that the tablets do not have to be tilted in the opposite direction as they pass along the tubular section from one surface to the other. In other arrangements the grinding surfaces are formed on the curved surfaces of cylindrical, conical or hyperbolic drums, or on endless bands.
