Abstract

A pattern indicator includes a bundle of optical fibres 5, each of which has a radial refractive index variation according to the formula n = n o (i - ar<SP>2</SP>), where n o and n are the values at the axis and at a point a distance r from the axis, and "a" is a positive constant. The fibres act as lenses and produce images on a screen 9 of patterns formed on a mask 6, the mask being illuminated by luminescent elements 7 controlled by electronic circuitry 8. The device may be used as a printer by using a photo-sensitive material as a screen. The patterns on the mask may be formed by replacing the screen by a series of patterns and by allowing light from one pattern to travel through one fibre back to the mask end where a photographic emulsion is exposed. Details of the methods of producing the fibres are given.
