Abstract

1,267,995. Compressing metal scrap. MICHIGAN FOUNDRY SUPPLY CO. 30 April, 1969, No. 22080/69. Heading B3H. [Also in Division C7] Metal particles e.g. Fe, Cu, Al turnings or borings are fed to a continuous furnace 12 and heated in an oxidizing atmosphere e.g. 1000- 1400‹ C. to devil the metal, and then fed to a hopper 18 where the height of the particles is sensed by probes 44 and 46 to control the flow of particles to the compacting mills 20. The compacted briquettes or sheets are discharged and water quenched at 32. The rate of feed of the particles through the furnace is controlled by the temperature at the exit end by a sensor 38 which transmits a signal to control the speed of motor 7. The probes 44, 46 control the speed of rotation of mills 20 and the apparatus is controlled to maintain 500 lbs of Fe borings in the hopper 18.
