Abstract
1,267,803. Mounting resistance heating elemerits in vapour heaters. LAPORTE TITANIUM Ltd. 17 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 15983/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C1] Apparatus for pre-heating the vapour of a, halide (excluding the fluoride) of one or more of the elements titanium, silicon, aluminium, zirconium and iron, e.g. to enable them to undergo oxidation reactions with oxidizing gases as in the formation of titanium dioxide (see Division C1), comprises a plurality of non- coiled resistance elements 26, of platinum or an alloy of platinum with rhodium, ruthenium or iridium, located in a plurality of ducts 20 arranged in parallel with one another, the inner surface of each duct being of a refractory non- metallic material inert with respect to the halide vapour. Elements 26 are wires or tapes, of increased cross-sectional area where they pass laterally from one duct 20 to an adjacent duct, the ducts being provided in a column of interfitting ceramic plates 17, 18, with recesses 24, 25, to accommodate the tape 26 where it passes between adjacent ducts. The plates from four supporting members, 13, 14, 15, 16, one for each of four resistance elements of different lengths. The plates are stacked in a conduit 4 defined by a refractory lining 3 of a casing 1.
