Abstract

1,267,426. Electric incandescent lamps. THORN LIGHTING Ltd. 1 May, 1969, No. 22391/69. Heading HlF. A tungsten-halogen cycle lamp having a fill comprising a compound containing hydrogen and a halogen which yields free halogen when heated is provided with means adapted to combine with the hydrogen yielded by the fill to reduce the hydrogen content of the reactive system. In a first embodiment the means comprises a structure which is arranged to be heated by the operation of the lamp and consists of a first material, such as Ti, Ta, Zr or Al or an alloy thereof, which absorbs hydrogen when heated and is reactive with the halogen, and a protective barrier of a second material, such as Pd or a Pd-Ni alloy, which is impermeable to the halogen but allows the hydrogen to permeate through to the first material. In a second embodiment the means consists of a second halogen which has a greater affinity for hydrogen than the halogen of the compound. The compound is preferably an alkyl halide such as methyl iodide.
