1,267,396. Nut controllers; screw-and-nut gearing. DENFORD MACHINE TOOLS Ltd. 17 Feb., 1970 [9 April, 1969], No. 18296/69. Headings B3B and B3T. [Also in Division F2] A split nut controller for a displaceable slide member in a machine tool such as a lathe, comprises half nuts 18 supported on carriers 12 which are pivotally mounted on pins 16 on the wall 14 of casing 10 mounted on a machine slide, the nut halves being urged apart by a spring 26 and closed against the spring to engage the lathe lead screw by rotatable member 24 located in a bore in the wall 14. The closing action of the half nuts is effected by a pin 20 which extends from the half nuts respectively to engage in chordal slots 22 in member 24. The rotation of the member 24 closing the half nuts and being returned in this position by an "over centre" relationship with the spring whereby the half nuts are held in the closed position and just overcome the force of the spring. To effect opening of the nuts to disengage the driving connection between half nuts and the lead screw a rod member 34 with a rack 30 thereon which engages teeth on the periphery of the member 24, is displaced in a direction parallel to the lead screw to rotate the member which permits the spring force to urge the half nuts apart. The rod member 34 may be actuated by abutment with an adjustable stop 42 on the machine tool as the machine slide traverses the bed. Alternatively, the member 24 may be operated manually.
