Abstract

126,738. Kent, A. F. S. March 10, 1917. Respiratory appliances; treatment, special systems of.-A garment for wear by airmen to alleviate the effects of diminished atmopheric pressure on the body comprises a covering for the whole or part of the body formed of impervious, inextensible material so that the space between the garment and the body cannot expand, and accordingly the enclosed air or other gas remains at normal pressure. The garment may be single walled, or double walled, or, as shown, may be formed with a single outer wall A enclosing an air bag D, E of impervious elastic material. The garment may be shaped to the body or may consist merely of a bag, and may comprise a helmet enclosing the head, or may extend only to the neck. A small pump or a reservoir of compressed gas may be employed to compensate any fall of pressure within the garment. Airtight joints may be made with the body at the wrists &c. by means of elastic or pneumatic bandages. The space within the garment may be divided into separate compartments, and the helmet may be supplied with air or oxygen, whilst the other parts are supplied with some other gas.
