Abstract

1,267,181. Welding by pressure. NIPPONDENSO K.K. 14 Jan., 1970 [19 Feb., 1969], No. 1877/70. Heading B3R. A tubular metal member 10 has a flange 11 with a flat surface which is held in pressure contact with another flat surface of a metal member 30 which may be a vessel for a pressurized fluid and the two members butt welded by electrical resistance heating. The flange 11 is formed by placing the member 10 in a pair of mould cavities 21a, 22a, Fig. 2, and the moulds 21, 22 are forced together. The total axial length of the cavities is smaller than the length of the tubing 10 so that the peripheral part of the tubing is forced into cavities 21b, 22b to form an annular flange 11. An end of the tubing is placed in a hole in the member 30 so that the flange abuts against the wall of the member and an electrode 40 applies pressure to the flange and supplies current to carry out the electrical resistance weld.
